    Councillor Hunter Madsen regarding Shaping the Next Port Moody – 7 Development Pitfalls and 7 Guidelines for Prudent Growth;

    AND THAT Council direct staff to determine, by reliable measurement, the extent of community support for elements of the framework proposed in this report, as part of the community input process toward updating the City’s Official Community Plan;

    AND THAT any confirmation of strong community support for elements of this framework be reflected accordingly in the community vision of the updated OCP.

    WHEREAS 8.9% of Port Moody’s Population is of Persian descent (12.7% of recent immigrants), and a collective 29.8% of the population are from Korean, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan;

    AND WHEREAS the City currently mainly acknowledges and celebrates “Western” holidays, and many people do not know much about how a large part of our community celebrate the biggest holidays, or even how beautiful the multicultural tapestry of Port Moody is;

    AND WHEREAS celebrating diverse holidays and learning from diverse populations builds community connectedness and demonstrates solidarity with a large portion of our community;

    THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT Port Moody staff be directed to review which holidays the City acknowledges and celebrates as recommended in the report dated March 29, 2021 from Councillor Amy Lubik regarding Request for Council Support to Celebrate Lunar and Persian New Year;

    AND THAT Port Moody annually light up City Hall Green for Norwuz, Persian New Year, and Red for Lunar New Year;

    AND THAT staff report back on the potential to send greetings for those holidays through our social media and website, which could include credible links to background information and stories about these holidays in order to promote understanding and celebration among a wider audience.
